How I take the ‘perfect’ Instagram picture

September 2, 2018

A lot of you seemed to enjoy my post on how to take the ‘perfect’ flatlay so I thought I’d carry on the series and share with you how I take my Instagram pictures. A few of you have requested that I make this blog post so hopefully you find it helpful! I’m definitely not saying that my Instagram pictures are perfect at all but I’ve been trying to put a bit more effort into taking them and I’m quite happy with how they turned out.

Firstly, I always like to choose a ‘theme’ for all the photos I take. I think it makes my feed look a bit better when my pictures all have the same colour scheme and I like to have something to aim for when taking my pictures. My theme is usually based on the season/event that’s going on at the moment e.g. in autumn all my pics are orange/Halloween themed. I get SO festive for any occasion so I love sharing my decor etc. At the moment, I’m taking pictures for my pink ‘summer’ feed so I thought I’d share how I took a few of my pictures for that.

Firstly, I go on Pinterest/Instagram and save any pictures that I think would match my aesthetic or I like how they’re taken etc. I LOVE to do this because it gives me so many ideas and inspiration for my pictures and I also learn how to style my pictures too. My Pinterest is @thatrebeccarose if you’d like to see some of the pictures I use for inspo.

After that, I either use my phone(pic on the right) or camera(pic on the left) to take some pics – I use my camera if I want a high quality/blurred background shot and my phone for flatlays. I get out all my props (normally fairy lights, pink flowers, pages out a book, magazine clippings or a blanket with a lot of texture) and lay them out on the floor. I normally try to’re-create’ some of the pictures that I’ve saved but change a lot of the props/colour of the picture. I then add smaller ‘details’ such as rings, glasses and necklaces because it gives the picture more texture and makes it a bit prettier. I normally take about 5 different shots from each set-up from different angles just so I can see which one I prefer. I also like to bulk-take a lot of my pictures in one go because it saves a LOT of time and mess! Finally, I always make sure that I take pictures when it’s bright because it really improves the quality of the picture.

Other pictures for my Instagram such as a movie night or outfit picture, I take whilst I’m actually doing them. Outfit pictures are probably the easiest to shoot – I just have to ~very~ kindly ask my sister to take a pic for me in front of a cute wall! I also like to have cosy movie nights quite often, especially if they’re themed for the season! I normally just rearrange a few items, put the film on the title scene, pop some fluffy socks in the shot, throw fairy lights over everything and take a burst of pictures!

I then edit my pictures using VSCO cam (let me know if you’d like a more in-depth post about how I edit my pics) and play around with the exposure, temperature, grain and shadows. After that, I upload my edited pictures into an app called Preview which basically lets you play around with your feed. I like to do this to make sure I have a variety of different pics (ya know fashion, beauty, lifestyle etc.).

Thank you so much for reading this blog post (if you actually got this far (!!)), I know it was quite a long one but there was SO much information I wanted to share! I hope I didn’t sound like tooo much of an Instagram-obsessed millennial and, to be honest, I mostly get a good picture by just messing around with my camera and hoping for the best! Let me know if you have any more questions about how I take my pics and I’ll be sure to answer.
